Greg was born on the Epiphany, January 6, 1965 to Robert Henry and Imogene Rose Holthaus Schoenekase at St. Mary Hospital. He attended St. John’s Grade School and Quincy Notre Dame High School, graduating in 1984. Greg earned an Associate’s degree in Business from John Wood Community College and a Bachelors degree in Marketing from Quincy University. He also earned a watchmaking degree from Gem City College.

Greg worked a variety of jobs, starting as a prescription delivery boy for Earl and Buss Drugstore. Greg worked at County Market to pay for College. Then, he moved to St. Louis and tied his love of woodworking and building to a career at Home Depot.

Greg moved back to Quincy to help care for his parents and was a mortgage banker at Bank of Liberty. He was a trained locksmith and sold newspaper advertising. He also worked at Menards. “Mr. Greg” found great joy in a 20 year career as a school bus driver for three and four year old pre-K children. He retired in January 2025 because of disability.

Greg was most proud of his biggest achievement. He designed and built his own brick home in Windermere Estates. From basement to roof, Greg participated in every aspect of the home’s construction with the help of friends. Greg did all of the custom woodworking inside of the home. His basement workshop held an infinite collection of tools. His love of carpentry came from his grandfather Aloysius Holthaus. In his life, Greg also enjoyed cheering for the Chicago Bears, fishing, golfing, and mowing his large lawn while smoking a cigar.

In addition to his wife of 13 years, Greg is survived by three older brothers and their wives: Bob (Pam), Steve (Wendi), and Tim (Susan); a maternal aunt, Collette (Mike) Haubrich, and numerous dear nieces, nephews, and cousins. Greg is also survived by his only brother-in-law, Charles Dooley Griffith, and many relatives by marriage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his Holthaus aunts and uncles: Jim, Greg, Geri, Jeanette, Dan, Jude, and Robert.
