Friday event celebrates Pike County history, America 250

PITTSFIELD — A Daughters of the American Revolution chapter’s interest in America’s 250th anniversary led to a countywide celebration planned in Pittsfield.
The Nancy Ross chapter “was looking for an America 250 Committee from its membership, then we started reaching out. We’ve got 22 people with 14 different entities,” said Cheri Myers, who chairs the effort with Theresa Sidwell. “Our goal was a community collaboration, and it definitely turned out that way. I just love that we’re all working together.”
Capping off the collaboration is the America 250 Celebration: Honoring Our Roots in Pike County set for Friday on the courthouse lawn in Pittsfield. Activities for all ages will be available 4 to 8 p.m.
“There’s history. There’s games. There’s vendors. We’ve got fashions of the 18th Century. We’ve got a dance troupe, a dulcimer player,” Myers said. “The historical society and America 250 came up with a map to visit history in Pike County for America’s 250th birthday. It’s got all the museums and points of interest around the county. We’re going to hand those out.”
Other highlights include flag ceremonies by the American Legion, announcing winners of a quilt raffle and scholarships and dedication of a new mural, painted by Jerry Johns and displayed on the Pike County Art Club building.
The committee began meeting last year and offering activities including school programs, book donations, a coloring contest and a story walk at Pittsfield’s King Park to celebrate the nation’s birthday.
“We’ve just got a really good group, a lot of good ideas,” Myers said. “The fact is this is never going to happen again. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
