Joan L. Riley Winslow, age 96, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at 2:00 a.m. in Good Samaritan Home, Quincy.
Joan was born November 6, 1929 in Quincy, IL. She was the daughter of Robert M. and Irma (Doht) Riley. She married Paul K. Winslow on November 5, 1955. Paul passed September 19, 2016, at the Illinois Veteran’s Home, Quincy.
Joan graduated from Emerson Grade School, Quincy High School (class of 1947), and Gem City Business College. She began working at the soda fountain at Riley’s Drug Store on 12th and State, Quincy, followed by working at the Adams County Courthouse, Quincy, and for Dr. Richard Harris, Quincy, before becoming a full time ‘stay-at-home’ mom.
Her daughter recalls, “As a child, I have treasured memories of how Mom read ‘Little Visits With God” with me, made sure we went to a Church as a family, had ‘Bible reading time’ with a mini dachshund on her lap, and listened to Tennessee Ernie Ford’s ‘Hymns’ record album while ironing… many ‘Jesus Loves Me’ seeds were planted within my soul through Mom’s ‘actions without words’.
Throughout the years, Joan enjoyed ‘eating in town’ with Paul and friends, visiting with their daughter and son-in-law and two granddaughters (and later their families), reading, and pampering their many dachshunds.
Later in life, overseeing and caring for her aging parents and assisting her husband, who had developed Parkinson’s Disease, were more than full time jobs for her for many years.
For 10 years, Bradford Villa, Koch’s Lane, Quincy, became Joan’s ‘assisted living residence’. The TLC from Danny and Jeannie Hattemar (owners), the nursing/activities/housekeeping staff in Villa 3, as well as ‘homemade meals’ and ‘on site hair care’, had Joan often saying, “Who could ask for anything more?!”
In 2023, Sunset Home, Quincy, with its rehab, skilled care, activities, and ‘on site hair care’ became a good fit for Joan, until she moved to Good Samaritan Home, when her name came up on a pre-registration waiting list that both Paul and she had joined. The overall ‘care, kindness, and dignity’ shown to Joan at Good Samaritan Home was truly remarkable!
Survivors include: one daughter, Pamela Kay, Payson, IL; two granddaughters, Lyndsey (Seth) Olson, Milan, IL and Lisa Wassenhove, LaBelle, MO; four great granddaughters, Malin, Keatyn, Eisley and Ayla; two great grandsons, Maverick and Noah; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Briggs, CO; nieces, Elizabeth Briggs, Courtney Weeth, and Christienne (Scott) Mann, all CO, and one nephew, Mark Mathews, CO.
