PIKE TO PIKE: Big Helping of the Big River

The Big River Band will be playing this Saturday at the Pike County Senior Center in Pittsfield, with the music starting at 6:30. Eat your evening meal before coming since no meal will be served there, only concessions. Doors open at 5:30. Come on out for a great evening of music and entertainment.
Then on Aug. 1, the Big River Band will be back at the Red Rooster Restaurant in Pittsfield. Doors open at 5:00 so you can order food and find a good seat, and then the music will start at 6:00.

A 95th birthday celebration for Carolyn Baker of New Salem, Illinois, was hosted by the family on July 11, 2026, at The Pittsfield Assembly of God Church in Pittsfield. It was a day filled with great food, shared memories of the past, and lots of new memories made to carry forward. Sixty-two family members were in attendance to celebrate the matriarch. The celebration ended with the birthday girl smiling and remarking that it was a most wonderful day!
It has been a very busy week for us. On the 16th, Single Seniors + One had their “Meet, Greet, & Eat” in Bowling Green, Missouri, at Merna’s Kitchen, which is a wonderful place to eat a noon meal. There were 16 of us present, and I believe the majority of us had a good time, besides a good meal with plenty of visiting, which is the whole point of this group … to visit and enjoy each other’s company.
Then on the 17th, the Big River Band took their final lap to Nebo and back after having a fine show at the Nebo Community Center. With the attendance of only 13 people (and only two from the Nebo area) and paying rent, it’s not feasible to continue playing there. “Live and Learn.” They have something else figured out for the near future, so keep watching this column to see what they have in mind.
