Samuel “Sonny” Boyd Smith, Sr. age 76, of Quincy, died on July 26, 2026 in his home. He was born on January 21, 1950, in Quincy, the son of Sam and Florence (Hayden) Smith. He married Linda E. Wild on July 12, 1969, at Lutheran Memorial Church, the couple recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.

He was a 1968 graduate of Quincy Senior High School. Sonny was employed at Gardner Denver until his retirement in 2015.

Sonny was a 50-year member of the Herman Masonic Lodge #39 and Quincy Consistory. He was a 33 Degree Master Mason and served as Commander-In-Chief Past Thrice Potent Master. He was also a member of the Ansar Shrine Temple of Springfield and a former member of Machinist Lodge 822.

He enjoyed taking his Corvette for rides in his free time. He loved to vacation and spend time with his family. Sonny especially loved watching and supporting his grandchildren in sports, dance, and school activities. He loved to laugh and have fun. Sonny will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his loving wife Linda, he is survived by his children: Melissa (Allen) Smith George, Melinda (Bob) Marion Shafer, Samuel (Rachel) Boyd Smith, Jr.

Grandchildren: Alexander (fiancé Jocelynn) Payden George, Alexis Paige George, Lindan Marion Edlin, and Samual Bryar Smith.

Many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Matilda “Tillie” K. Redner, Mary Lou Huner, Betty Joe Klossing, Judy K. Taylor, Linda S. Irick, brothers Charles Smith, Robert “Bob” Smith, Jackie “Jack” Smith, Gordon “Goy” Smith, and Larry Ray Smith.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 12:00p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home. There will be a Masonic Service at the conclusion of visitation and a prayer before leaving for the graveside service at Greenmount Cemetery.
