QUINCY — It was a promising first half for the Quincy Blue Devils in their Class 2A Quincy Regional girls soccer championship game against Chatham Glenwood.
Quincy High was giving Glenwood a fight early on and the game remained scoreless until the 31st minute when Glenwood’s Nora Gummerman scored a goal.
“The first half was good,” said QHS head coach Travis Dinkheller. “We created three really good scoring opportunities. Their goalkeeper smothered a shot by Avery (Morrison), who picked up a loose ball. We had a corner kick and Cam (Byquist) had a header and put it over it. Then we had a breakaway the their goalkeeper was pretty quick off the line to stop it.”
The second half was a different story as Glenwood scored three quick goals to put the game out of reach, with the Titans coming away with a 5-1 win over the Blue Devils to win the regional championship.
“The second half started about as poorly as it could, not because of what we did,” said Dinkheller. “They earned a throw in deep in our end and the girl hit one of those balls that floated all the way over and cut the post crossbar a minute into the second half. That kind of sucked the wind out of our sails.”
Glenwood’s Caroline Cody had a hat trick, with all three of those goals coming in the second half. Leah Bolletta also scored a goal in the second half for the Titans.
Morrison scored the lone goal for the Blue Devils.
“You always worry about having a good half and coming back out for the second half having to regain that momentum and traction that you had,” said Dinkheller. Unfortunately we had a ball bounce up before we could catch our breath, and it was 3-0 and then 4-0 at one point. Avery Morrison had a nice goal on an assist by Eden Lenz to make it 4-1, and then they tucked one in late to make it 5-1.”
It was the second matchup in the past two weeks between these two teams, with Glenwood beating QHS 2-0 on May 12.
“We tried to take away the middle from them,” said Dinkheller. “The first time we played them, we did a 4-4-2 diamond and we did that again tonight. They started in a similar fashion about midway through the first half. They made a slight switch to their system and was pushing a third forward up, which we were able to manage pretty well.”
The Blue Devils finish the 2026 season with a 6-14 record and won their first regional game in three years after defeating Granite City in the semifinal game on Tuesday.
QHS will graduate Lenz, Morrison, Avri Warner, Brai Warner, Reigan Colombo, Bella Brown, Maddy Kuhl and Ireland Deming.
“I was really proud of the way the girls battled from start to finish,” said Dinkheller. “There’s no words that you have other than to just thank the seniors for all their effort and energy, and the leadership they brought to the team. You tell the girls after watching Chatham pick up the plaque to work towards that because I want to hold that plaque next year.”
The hope is for QHS to learn from this loss and make improvements for next season.
“I said all along, our record doesn’t reflect the team that we were,” said Dinkheller. “We struggle to find the back of the next at times, but here at the end of the season we played Chatham twice, who is a very good team. We also finished the regular season with Helias on Saturday, who is a really good team and we had a great second half against them.”
