QUINCY — Firefighters responded to a residential fire Friday afternoon that sent one family pet to the veterinarian’s office, with no other injuries being reported.
Quincy Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael Dade said no one was at home at 2405 Crystal Avenue. Three crews from QFD responded and made entry, locating a fire in the attic of the home. While conducting a search of the premises, firefighters located a family dog with serious smoke inhalation.
“We (gave) him supplemental oxygen,” Dade said. “He was breathing on his own, but it’s hard to breathe in a smoke-filled environment like that. So he was struggling for some air, but they got him supplemental oxygen.”
Dade said the residence did have working smoke detectors. He noted that had any residents been home, they would have had that warning of a fire.
Crews with Engines 2, 3, and 5 responded, along with QFD’s incident command, the volunteer Rehabilitation team, Adams County Ambulance, and officers with the Quincy Police Department.
The call came in just before 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Shortly after noon, crews were packing up gear while investigators began efforts to determine the cause of the fire.
“We’ve still got a hose line in place,” Dade said. “We’re just kind of letting it breathe a little bit, make sure everything is extinguished. When the investigators get here, we’ll make sure we support them in their investigative efforts.”
Dade said that the priority for firefighters is always lives first, including pets, and then property. But he said they attack fires in the best way that protects those things while still allowing investigators the best chance to finding out what happened.
“We want to be pretty tactical about how we extinguish fires,” he said. “We don’t want to get rid of any evidence that might lead those investigators to know what the cause was.”
No injuries were reported among responding firefighters or other personnel on scene.
