JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday returns Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9, and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is urging shoppers to use the tax-free weekend to support local businesses.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue, certain back-to-school purchases, including clothing, school supplies, computers, and other items defined by state statute, are exempt from state and local sales and use taxes during the three-day window. Qualifying purchases will carry a sales and use tax rate of zero percent during that period.

Brad Jones, NFIB’s Missouri state director, said the holiday offers an opportunity for residents to save money while supporting small businesses.

“The sales tax holiday is a great opportunity for Missourians to make the most of their budgets while investing in the local businesses that serve our communities,” Jones said. “Small businesses are the foundation of our state’s economy. They create good-paying jobs for our friends and families while supporting our schools and local charities. Every purchase made at a small business this weekend helps support the Missouri economy. It’s a small way to make a big difference.”

More information about qualifying items and requirements is available through the Missouri Department of Revenue.

NFIB, founded in 1943, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that advocates on behalf of small and independent business owners in Washington and in all 50 state capitals.
